This is painting by Martin Collins, it captures something magical, a brief moment, that feeling you have standing there watch the ever changing light of and on the Welsh mountains, that feeling that can’t be photographed and can hardly ever painted, it is something that can’t be explained if you haven’t stood there, and Martin here, has explained just that thing that can’t be explained, he has painted what it is. I speak as a painter who grew up in North Wales, an artist who still has the voice of painter Peter Prendergast in his ear, a painter now marooned in the noise East London rather than the mountains and seas (and especially that line where sea meets the sky) of North Wales…

Martin Collins – Ascending Wall, 2021, Oil on Canvas, 40cm x 40cm

Ralph Sanders, from Llandudno’s Ffin y Parc Gallery, just posted the image of Martin’s painting along with new of a forthcoming show; “Happy New Year Everyone! I am very excited to be hanging our first major solo exhibition of 2025 – Martin Collins (1941-2023) Last Light  – This exhibition is not only a retrospective celebration of Martin’s paintings but a chance to see previously unseen work. In his last few years Martin immersed himself totally in his work, walking the hills and coasts and re-visiting favourite places to paint. As his health failed, he found solace in simply looking out from his studio in the Conwy valley and painting the ever changing light, weather and atmosphere. Despite successfully exhibiting for several decades, in the latter years Martin no longer felt the need for his work to be seen, instead choosing to devote his time purely to painting. It is only after his passing that these paintings are now available to be shown at Ffin y Parc for the first time alongside a selection of his earlier work”.
