Sunday 7 April ’13 , Cafe Oto – Regular meeting of The London Improvisers Orchestra. The LIO draws on London’s rich pool of improvising musicians and is part of a long and varied heritage that stretches back to the free-jazz big bands of Chris McGregor and Mike Westbrook, the intuitive ensembles of John Stevens and purely improvising groups such as the Continuous Music Ensemble. 

 

Filmed on one day in 2008 “Singular Collective” is a 25 minute documentary – including extensive music sections – of the London Improvisers Orchestra performing. Conductors are Dave Tucker, Adam Bohman, Caroline Kraabel, Steve Beresford and Ashley Wales. Musicians include – Lol Coxhill, Alan Tomlinson, Sylvia Hallett, Terry Day, Harry Beckett, Roland Ramanan Adam Bohman, Tony Marsh and Steve Beresford. Filmed and edited by Helen Petts. The film is dedicated to Harry Beckett.

Brötzmann returns to OTO after last November’s Tentet blow-out for two evenings in an equally intense small group setting – duos with drummer Paal Nilssen-Love and trios with special guests Pat Thomas on piano and expat South African trumpet player Claude Deppa – perhaps best known for his membership of the Jazz Warriors and Chris MacGregor’s Brotherhood of Breath and his playing with Carla Bley and many others.
