A quick Thing of The Day today, a rather deliciously one, we are in a rush, Be Your Own Pet, Hot Wax and Black Midi are calling us to our local park. How good is that new Be Your Own Pet album that#s our today, more on that over the weekend. Today’s Thing comes from Finnish sonic voyagers Virta who have in turn have shared a new single titled Sola from their upcoming album Horros (out October 6th via Svart Records). The single comes on the heels of their recent tracks Sininen and Tunneli
.
The press release that came with this new Virta track tells us “Sola unfolds like a vast, serene landscape painted with sound. Layers of ambient textures provide a cinematic backdrop, like a canvas of clouds that shift and evolve with the music while Antti Hevosmaa’s trumpet reverberates like echoes across a tranquil canyon”, which is about right…
Speaking of the track, the band say, ”Sola represents the minimal and calming side of the music we make. It’s also one of our favourite tracks from the upcoming album. In our music there’s often many layers of different sounds that create the whole piece. In the case of Sola, it’s quite the opposite as there are only a few sources of sound that leave room for emptiness.
For me, Sola is a hymn. Somewhat of a sacred praise reaching towards the stars. Melancholic but still hopeful. The choir at the end we recorded in an old stone church in Varpaisjärvi. We sang the phrase again and again all together, so it started to sound like a twenty-headed choir. Repeating the same thing felt like worship. Maybe that’s one reason why I feel the track has that spiritual depth.”
