Organ Thing of The day – A quick one today, busy times. The October 2023 edition of White Cube Salon focuses on Georg Baselitz’s BDM Gruppe (BDM Group) (2012), a “monumental sculpture of three imposing figures with interlocked arms”. I do rather like these monthly online editions, not everyone lives within walking distance of a gallery, those who live in big cities might put their noses in the air and say it is all about being there, walking around the piece, having a conversation with it, one on one, just you and the piece or the artist, breathing it, sensing it, within touching distance, that knowing nod and no words needed at the stranger who’s also looking at the piece of art you are. Of course you have to be there with the art but some of us grew up in places hours away from and kind of decent art gallery and of course there’s a value in viewing a piece of art on line, especially when a gallery like White Cube, for all that is wrong with a gallery like White Cube, does the on line thing so well.

The e.mail about this month’s edition of White Cube Salon came in and there they were, those powerful (almost) black shapes, those blocks, imposing indeed. You find photos, a video of the piece, a healthy amount of comment and well, all you really need from us is the link
– Brutally notched and gouged, three imposing figures stand united with interlocked arms in this immense bronze group by Georg Baselitz. Unapologetically reworking classical sculptural tradition, Baselitz draws upon a controversial historic moment to ultimately discard external reference points in favour of championing raw and abstracted form. Through its violently carved planes, heavy stature and oppressive black patination, BDM Group looms large as an icon within the artist’s mature sculptural output
