Deborah Roberts has a show called What about us? opening as the first show at Stephen Friedman Gallery’s new New York gallery. Now as much as we do like pretty much everything we’ve encountered at Stephen Friedman Gallery’s London spaces and art fairs, we wouldn’t really both with covering a gallery show in New York but hey, this is new work from Deborah Roberts!
Hey, if you happen to be reading this in New York, the gallery is found at 54 Franklin Street, New York, 10031. The opening happens between 6–8pm on Thursday 2nd November and then runs from 3rd November until 22nd December
“Our new gallery in Tribeca, New York opens ‘What about us?’, a solo exhibition by Austin-based artist Deborah Roberts. This is Roberts’ third exhibition with Stephen Friedman Gallery and her first in New York in over five years. Featuring some of the artist’s largest works to date, the show continues Roberts’ exploration of how systemic racism shapes the way Black children grow up in the world. Roberts is celebrated for depicting Black children and adolescents dressed in bright colours and patterns against white or black backgrounds. Her fragmented figures appear in mid-movement as they gaze or beckon toward the viewer. Interweaving collage and painting, Roberts’ multi-layered compositions offer a form of resistance as they explore the complexity of Black subjecthood in relation to race, identity, politics, and society”.
