An Organ Thing of The Day is needed on this last rainy Saturday of October and here is, a transatlantic collaboration between Oakland, CA and London, Dog Door’s rather beautiful debut, Cover Up Contest, and yes, this glorious first single does provide “a welcome window into the fervent, creative minds of Oliver Girdler (Forced Fandom / O. Girdler) and Jamie Cameron (The Last Dinosaur), whose shared love of lo-fi and kaleidoscopic pop funnels down into the patchwork that makes up Dog Door’s sonic quilt”.

Lo-fi can so often mean lazy, the easy option, an excuse, a mask for shoddy cheap production or lack of ability, none of that is the case here. You kind of expect crafted warmth when Jamie Cameron is involved, this first taste isn’t immediate, it takes a listen or two before the melody pulls you in and the details start to emerge and smile at you. It is tender, you might say brittle but then it does feel rather strong, it feels careful, full of care, carefully made., you could talk of Sparklehorse or Grandaddy, the phrasing of a more delicate Sonic Youth or Teenage Fan club maybe, nothing is that obvious though, nothing here that can be pinned down as you go back in for a seventh or eighth heart warming listen of something rather special.

Jamie Cameron had the following to say about the single:  “Oliver and I channel our slacker heroes to make a lo-fi nostalgia journey to the heart of the sun with verses sounding like forgotten summers, a Velvets psych wig-out middle section and a sunshine Beach Boys-esque chorus crescendo. Come in and wipe your paws off, if you don’t like it you can turn around and go back out the way you came.”

Cover Up Contest is the first in a series of recordings from the band set to land over the coming months so we’re told. Find thing track via Bandcamp
