Now do we really need to say that much about this, about these two pieces of radiant beauty? Released just after Midnight on the second day of February? Here we are at just past Midnight and after one of the most rewarding sunsets in a long long time, the sun rather than the moon was very red this evening. This once again feels spiritual, ir feels strong, it feels defiant, it feels right, magical things conjured up and voiced just right… We wax.
We Wax. We Shall Not Wane is an audio Installation by Gazelle Twin, featuring Maxine Peake, reworked for digital release. Originally commissioned by Somerset House, London, for ‘The Horror Show’ Exhibition, October 2022 – Feb 2023 curated by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, and Claire Catterall.
We Wax. We Shall Not Wane is an incantation of grief and defiance in lament to women lost to violence through the centuries until the present day. The narrated texts – read by British actor Maxine Peake – are an amalgamation of historic text and literature, including; Agnes Sampson’s Healing Charm (1591), excerpts from Ben Jonson’s The Witches’ Charms from The Masque of Queens (1609), and Gazelle Twin’s own words.
20% of Bandcamp sales from this release for the first month will be donated to the UK charity, End Violence Against Women – www.endviolenceagainstwomen.org.uk
