Shall we write a new editorial? Oh the endless demand and who needs a damn editorial? Let the actual music do the actual walking and the actual talking. Exact same thing again, another five (or so) slices of musical things that have passed our way recently and however you like to slice it and of course it was the price of lemons and here comes the intro, Don’t be flippant she said, how could it ever be flippant? I can’t remember why she said that now, in one ear, out the other, we have a bad attitude here apparently, no respect for those who work in the music industry, well no poop Sherlock, have you only just worked that one out? We’ve been showing (and getting) zero respect since the last century, zero flips given…
Five? There’s something rather compelling about five. Cross-pollination? Five more? Is there another way? A better way? A cure for pulling flying rabbits out of the clouds? Is there a rhyme? Is there a reason? Was there ever a reason? What do reasons make? Five more? Snake oil? Everything must go and no, we never do and the proof of the pudding is in that proof reading. When we started this thing, oh never mind, it doesn’t matter why we started this damn thing and like we asked last time, does anyone bother reading the editorial? Does anyone ever actually look down the rabbit hole or is it all just method acting? We do really try to listen to everything that comes in, we do it so you don’t have to, we are very (very) very very picky about what we actually post on these fractured pages or about what gets played on the radio or indeed what we hang in a gallery. Cut to the chase, never mind the editorial, skip this bit, there’s loads of music further down the page, well five or so pieces of music that have come our way in the last few days and what’s Wordsworth? Just the basic facts and links and those sounds (and visuals), that’s surely all you need from us?
Here we go, five more slices of music that have recently come our way, this time we start somewhere in Canada again…
No time today, we’re making Mixtapes, we’re in full Frieze Week mode, music will mostly be taking a back seat this week…
1: Scions have just shared the second single from their debut album (out in November), we’re not sure where they’re going yet, so far so good though, this second taste is maybe a little more obvious than the first was, we await the third…
Here’s what we said last time….
Now this is rather beautiful and today is a day that needs something beautiful. Not to be confused with the rather decent Australian band of the same name, this is the debut for Canada’s Scions.
“New experimental nine-piece ensemble announces debut album To Cry Out In The Wilderness out 8th of November via Idée Fixe Recordsamd share debut single Fight Song” trumpets the press release….
Do they have a touch of early Efterklang about them? Those Parade days we were only talking about the other day? Hey, this is our first taste of Scions, I suspect it might be yours as well, I suspect the next taste will be jsut as gloriously rewarding, we await it, meanwhile here’s the first single….
2: You Doo Right – Really enjoying what we’re seeing and hearing from You Doo Right at the moment, love their drama – “As experimental rock trio Yoo Doo Right prepare to release their forthcoming LP, From the Heights of Our Pastureland on November 8th, 2024 via Mothland, today the band share their new single, the emphatic Eager Glacier. To the beat of turbulent drums, the listener is guided through sprawling soundscapes of deep synthetic whirs, unrelenting electric strings, mercurial melodies, and distorted reels. With grave aplomb, this escalating and far-reaching piece from the Montreal outfit takes you on a sonic journey across ambient, post-rock and drone metal”.
Here’s more – ORGAN THING: Let’s get it right this time, more from Canada’s rather refined You Doo Right…
3: iiis – now this is quietly good, rather like this understated first taste, they’re going to all the right places on this Autuminal Sunday moring – “iiis are a 3 piece from Oxford, UK and they have their debut out on 4th October. Mixing Shoegaze, Slowcore and wider alt rock influences, Vocal Harmony’s intertwine over shimmering melodies, often broken and frayed at the edges, pulling in influences such as Galaxie 500, My Bloody Valentine, Bardo Pond, Yo La Tengo and Low”. Stick with it for the beautiful simplicity of the delicately stong third track now. here’s the Bandcamp
4: Butthole Surfers – Locust Abortion Technician Medley, a rarity originally available exclusively as a seven inch that was find inside the coffee table book, Butthole Surfers: What Does Regret Mean?. This track was initially intended as the B-side for the proposed “Human Cannonball” 7″ single and has just been released as a downlad thing via Bandcamp. It is essentially a sound collage, an excellent one, although I keep expecting their blistering version of Sabbath’s Sweat Leaf or at least Sweat Loaf to kick in
5: The Hu – Not quite so much throat singing this time but this is an impressive version of the Iron Maiden song. Here’s the links you need.
The Hu have brought Mongolian music to the forefront in recent years. They will now bring their “unparalleled and immersive performance” to audiences across North America as they join forces with rock legends Iron Maiden as support on their Future Past tour that started on October 4 in San Diego, CA. The Hu have paid tribute to Iron Maiden by releasing a cover version of one of the band’s most popular songs, The Trooper.
Founding member, Lead Throat Singer, and Morin Khuur musician Gala excitedly states: “The HU is thrilled to be on Iron Maiden’s Future Past Tour in North America. For us, this tour represents an important milestone for the Mongolian music industry and a historical step towards the world stage. As a special thank you, and out of huge respect as fans of the band, we covered their legendary song ‘The Trooper’ and are happy to be sharing that with you ahead of this tour!”
And here’s something of their own….
And while we’re here, someone went to the bother of throwing hundreds of versions of Hawkwind’s Urban Gorilla on to one YouTube thing, this is the kind of thing we like to see happen, we need more things like this….
