“Brussels-based power trio Don Kapot are set to release new EP Remedy on the 15th November via W.E.R.F. Records with a six-date UK to follow”. Power Trio doesn’t really do it though, they’re more than that, this is hard boiled experimental goodness, a lifeboat of angular, bendy, punctuated free jazz, afrobeat and just a hint of krautpunk sailed by Giotis Damianidis (bass), Viktor Perdieus (baritone saxophone) and Jakob Warmenbol (drums), Remedy is the first in a series of three EPs to be released over the coming months and follows the release of their critically acclaimed album I Love Tempo in 2023.

Seems the threesome spent three days in the studio earlier this year, the resulting tracks showcase Don Kapot’s love of using a wide range of instruments including bass, drums and tenor saxophone, evolving their sound into a solid complex rhythmic wave against “a Death Grips-style hip-hop backdrop and demented samples” – Death Grips? Well yes, it is, as we said already, hard boiled, those textures are there, that musical desire, actually they’ve gone a little Gong right now at the end Bascule

“EP opener Bascule has an organological peculiarity that is immediately apparent; Perdieus’ oboe manifesting in a deep trance. Elsewhere, Buskruit (Dutch for gunpowder) is a volcanic mix of bass and drums while Remedy is a disparate mix of samples, beats and oddities” and I’m bluffing here as I dance around the architecture of the press release that comes with this very colourful three tracker. Too restrained to be considered urgent, there is an urgency though, a vital musical urgency that runs through all three tracks, a positive challenge. It is all very very listenable, in this case hard-boiled does not mean a difficult listen, all three tracks are deliciously enjoyable and that open of Buskruit is almost funk, classic afrobeat Ginger Baker style, Buskruit is brilliant.

Remedy meanwhile is just a warm feeling in your belly, red green and purple, it is falling upstairs, give me the remedy, it awkwardly good.

Releasing their self-titled debut album in 2018 via Mr. Nakayasi Records, Don Kapot signed to Flemish record label W.E.R.F. Records in 2021, releasing four albums under the label and have performed sold-out shows across Belgium and the Netherlands.
