We started off here intending to review the new live album, but then album reviews and comventions and the rest are not what Putan Club are really about, they are, thankfully, gloriously, not your average band and s owhat started as an album review became, well, read on…
Putan Club – Filles D’Octobre (Toten Schwan Records) – Who are they? Where are we? What’s the score? Iconoclastic nihilism? “Le Putan Club est un banc d’essai”. Putan Club say they are a test bench, the work of Gianna Greco and François R. Cambuzat, an avant-rock band dealing in ethnomusicology research, theatre, film and from what we can work out, a hell of a lot more more. They sound tribal, like a ritual, they sound wired, they sound threatening, gloriously so. They sound exhausting and that’s only in terms of listening to this live record that’s just come out. This is properly progressive, they talk of Feminist Electronic Industrial Avant Rock Ethno Techno World Sauvagerie which kind of seems they’ve hit the nail square on the head or maybe they’ve hit it somewhere left of centre? It does sound wonderfully ritualistic, it does sound intense, deliciously so, the music kind of does all the talking for them, you don’t really need an attempt to describe it here do you? They appear to be a two piece now, they talk of “supporting ideas of grassroots-level self-organising, mutual aid, solidarity, sustainable development, animal-friendly lifestyles, anti-authoritarianism, autonomy, feminism and revolution and other initiatives that aim to create a more just and free society” and suggest that “If you oppose any form of social discrimination and views that generate discrimination, hatred or division and you support people saying no to racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, party politics, capitalism and organised religion, to keep in touch”.

Putan Club are a duo from Italy and France, based between Agrigento and Faro, they deal in “voices, guitars, bass and wild/heavy computer. The Putan Club stands for feminism, electricity, electronics and savagery”.
What else do we need to say? You’ve got their words, you have a few of ours, you’ve got the Bandcamp down there with the full album waiting to be explored, you’ve got a selection of very visual videos, you’ve got the links and you’ve got one of the best band photos we’ve seen in a long while. The Putan Club strike me as something that’s about far more than just being something to listen to, something that’s much more than just another band making more records, they appear to matter just a little bit more, people I want to care about a bit more.
“Nota Bene: the PUTAN CLUB is NOT a PUNK band, but takes everything it needs: avant, techno, ethno, jazz, metal, classical… The Putan Club is a test bench”.
And well look, we haven’t seen them yet, but we’re told that “An evening in their company changes your approach to music. Afterwards, nothing will ever be the same again. Strong words? Only for those who have never met them. Attend one of their performances, and then you will agree… a unique multi-sensory experience… a work of destruction of sound stereotypes, in all their forms… energy of adorcistic rituals… storm of industrial, techno, ritualistic, ethnic, tribal, and noise, all in a wall of dissonances… It is the opportunity to sweep away all that moral decadence that rhymes with selfishness, ignorance and conformism… the (very successful) attempt to proudly flaunt a model that differs from the imposed dictates. A full-fledged revolt, a rebellion, a subversive act… The Putan Club has chosen to explore the peripheries that are on the borders of the known, on the margins of the imaginable, the thinkable and the tangible, in order to light the fire of revolt with the fire of discovery, of knowledge, of taking an uncomfortable, anti-capitalist, anti-government position. And an album like “Filles d’Octobre” perfectly represents their choice of life. We are in the midst of an irreversible end of life, but perhaps, we can still try to reverse the trend. And, if, euthanasia must be, let’s at least hope that it is accompanied by the sound of the Putan Club” – (Marco Valenti, Grind on the Road)
