Fulguromatic – Fulguromatic (Margen/áMARXE) – Now this is refreshing, respected Spanish label Margen/áMARXE have something rather rewarding here in the shape of a debut album from French duo Fulguromatic. This is a creative blend of Canterbury flavours, jazz-rock, a touch of colourful Zeuhl and some properly inventive properly progressive prog that is, as someone else has already pointed out, tremendously addictive.
There’s is a thrilling ride, both musically and in terms of the many rhythms of it all. Their sound is apparently partly due to their use of invented instruments, something that gives it and them that very French avant feel. France is alive with great bands at the moment, Fulguromatic are most certainly another. Some of those song titles will give you a clue, Top 5 des citations d’Albert Einstein is a brilliant bit of very locked-on very French Krautrock (if you can have such a thing?), The Unconceivable Curse of Atahualpa is as intriguing as the title suggests, elsewhere there’s hints of classic You era Gong, maybe a hint or two of a less forceful Magma, not of it cloning anyone though, this is a band wanting (and succeeding) to head to new places, a band challenging themselves, a band forging a sound and identity of their own. At times refined, graceful, beautiful, they feel sunny, fresh, they almost hint at very mellow hip-hop here and there, they certainly have soul. What we have here is a fresh sounding, refreshing and more than welcome addition to the already rather healthy avant progressive. Highly recommended.
Meanwhile, from earlier days, three years ago; Enregistré et filmé à la Petite Mare, 2021.
