Another of those quick parish noticeboard type things, Ni are a band who’ve been covered and played around these parts rather a lot, of the last album (released back in December 2023 on the always excellent Dur Et Doux label) it we said “Ni are an important band, a vital band, their latest thrilling album is out today. Are they sounding even more brutal? Yer man Weasel Walter might approve, this is indeed properly brutal prog, properly progressive rock, proper brutality. This is cleverly constructed violent light and shade, progressive as in moving forward, as in pushing the edges of the musical envelope – sometimes frantic, always composed, graceful even when they are falling up the stairs and well, read the rest of the review here; A couple of tasty albums – R.M.F.C’s wired up post punk, Ni’s brutal avant prog… or skip that and just check out the album on Bandcamp or find Ni on Facebook
The Ni album did figure in our best of that year – ORGAN: Our best 43 albums of a very musically busy 2023. Who did we rate?
And as was just said up there, Ni are a band who’ve been covered and played around these parts rather a lot, we remind you of this today because Ni are playing a hastly re-arranged rather last minute first ever London show on their way to ArcTanGent festival – ORGAN PREVIEW: Godspeed You! Black Emperor added to an already packed ArcTanGent bill that features Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Slift, the mighty KayoDot and Ni as well as Melvins and a thousand more…
ArcTanGent happens over four days between 13th and 16th August not far from Bristol, Ni are playing the packed festival on the14th, before that Ni will now play the aforementioned last minute London gig on Tuesday 12th August at 229 (which you find at 229 Great Portland Street, London, W1W 5PN) and not at the previously advertised Moor Beer Vaults so go to the wrong place! The gig at 229 comes with support from the rather politely melodic neo-prog duo Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate – yeah, I know, a strange mismatch of a bill really, but hey, Hats Off seem like decent people, just not really our thing and well, their better moments are a little Camel flavoured, a kind of… Opening the London show is TCM74, a solo artist (in real life Craig Murray from the band IAN), TCM74 kicks off the evening with a short experimental noise/drone set. Can’t say we know much about Craig, Ian or TCM74 and he doesn’t appear to have an online presence, the link on the London promoter’s social media took us to some Texas Chainsaw Massacre DVD dealer….
Ni also play at Yes in Manchester on August 13th, our work is done here. All you need now is the link for full details of the London gig and here’s some recent live footage…
