Hannya White says there’s another way, she’s kind of down with what is happening and who’s holding it down in Mexico, that’s explainted in a recent release. Her most recent release is a track on that excellent Metamorphika vol.1 compilation album that just came out (Metamorphika is an artist-led, community-driven arts space where experimental theatre, music, and fine art collide). Hannya is based in London, she’ll tell you more herself in a moment for she is the latest creative to answer out Thirteen Questions
What’s that noise? The music she makes is rather painterly, dark though, darkly coloured and somewhere in the murk of that corner over there, it would be very easy to pass by and think there’s nothing to see here, nothing to hear, that would be wrong though, her art really deserves your proper attention. She’s been rather active on the London underground music scene for two or three years now.
Darkly coloured murky sound art, some kind of dark late night don’t prod it with a stick thing is what we said of her most recent release; ”Let’s play. Who are you? We put different clothes on, we take another name, we play a different game”, was that last time? What is she saying? Is it a game? How low can you go? There’s another way. “To play with minimal but striking imagery, repeating sentences ‘Why are you not holding it down in Mexico?’ Who buried a treasure? A sense of adventure, danger, freedom, or perhaps even a touch of aggression, pushing the situation to a limit” – It does feel like she is pushing the situation, it just isn’t clear what the situation actually is, you do kind of want to run with her though, find out where she might go, where she might lead you, she does sound like a painter, it is all rather intriguing, who can’t hold what down in Mexico? I rather like the way she paints her sound…
Hannya White is a painter and a music maker, she kind of paints her music, we needed to ask her about it, we needed to ask questions, we needed to ask her our Thirteen Questions
The idea is simple, an ongoing series of thirteen questions sent out to people who’s creativity we’re rather admiring and enjoying at the moment – artists, musicians, film makers, cake testers and who knows who, twelve of the questions generic, the thirteenth specific…
Thirteen questions answered by Hannya White
1: WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO?
I am Hannya White; I paint and I make music. For me, music feels less like sound and more like a scene, a shortcut, a flash, or a painting. It’s about capturing a feeling – something you can almost pull from the air.
2: WHERE ARE YOU TODAY? WHERE ARE YOU MOST DAY
Right now I am here…
3: WHO OR WHAT IS EXCITING YOU RIGHT NOW?
Too many things; I can barely focus…
4: WHY DO YOU MAKE ART?
I tried some other things, and the most worrisome experience was sitting in an office and ordering lunch at 1:30 PM every day. Now I think, “Mmmh, I can’t afford lunch.” I love art because it’s unpredictable.
5: HOW DO YOU WORK?
I started to making samples, which is fun, I do sometimes walk outside and collect random noises. Most of the time I am just collecting.
6: TELL US ABOUT THE ART/MUSIC YOU MOST IDENTIFY WITH?
Oh, I like lots of art. I like it most when it’s genuine, but I guess everyone wants to connect with the art they like.
7: WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR OWN WORK?
That it’s changing and reflects a certain episode – like when I was lovesick, living in a squat, or in the middle of the high street. Most of the time, it reflects scenes out of life, from people directly or indirectly, close or far away. I like that I can do what I want when I want, though it’s nice if others like it too.
8: WHAT DO YOU DISLIKE ABOUT YOUR OWN WORK?
I prefer to listen to this kind of music at home. At home, the structures and oddities are so nice. Performing live can be strange. So, yeah – but do I dislike it? I don’t know.

9: WHAT HAS BEEN THE HAPPIEST MOMENT OF YOUR LIFE SO FAR?
Ohhhh, I think a few days ago. I experienced a sense of luck I have never felt before. Something just felt right – an unexchangeable feeling. Then I got other news, which was also good, but this one was in a league of its own. That was an interesting day.
10: WHAT MAKES YOU ANGRY?
I think everyone should be treated fairly and equally, and if that doesn’t happen, it can make me angry. But for sure, if someone is being an asshole, treat them like an asshole—fairly. But maybe I am not an angry person at all, though my friends might say otherwise.
11: WHICH SUPERPOWER WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE AND WHY?
Ah, easy, flying.
12: WHAT COULDN’T YOU DO WITHOUT?
Being as independent as a bird.
13: IS THERE ANOTHER WAY?
Dreaming.
And finally any future shows or events coming up that you wish us to tell people about?
I would love to play more shows because I have a new set and unpublished songs. To spoil the direction a bit, you can head to Metamorphika Studio’s new label compilation and have a listen..
