The first in a short series of Recent Work online exhibitions from Cultivate as we catch up with what some of the artists who have been regular contributors to Cultivate shows and events. We’ll let the art do the walking and talking, there’s some editorial and a link or two at the foot of the page underneath the 43 images of Edgington‘s work for this is an exhibition featuring images of some of the recent work of Birmingham-based painter Edgington…
IMPORTANT: Please do click on an image to enlarge it and see each piece of art in full or to run the slide show and do please please please view it all on a decent sized monitor, something more respectful than just a damn phone for gawdsake, surely the art deserves more than just a tiny phone, it was put together with a decent computer screen in mind… Thank you

Edgington (b.1991) is a Midlands of England artist making “largely autobiographical works exploring mental illness, trauma and memory”. Born and raised in Rugby, Edgington now lives and works in Digbeth, Birmingham. As we’ve said before, we really don’t want to say too much here, I think, in this case, the art really does do most of the talking and mystery is never a bad thing, less information is more. We will say that somewhere along the way, while studying art history, Edgington began to “experiment and find ways of making work through textiles, photography, drawing and illustration before arriving at the current practise of mixed media painting and drawing”, it does feel like there’s some kind of journey of discovery here, a finding of self?

I can’t recall where we first came across Edgington, it might have been via a social media feed, it might have been a response to one of our Cultivate open calls? Wherever it was that we first encountered the art, it made us what to include that energy found in the work in the middle of a group show or two. There’s something about the mark making, the boldness, the commitment, there’s something brave about Edgington’s work, something about the way line and colour are combined in a rather forthright way, something about the personality. Edgington says the aim is to keep “spontaneity, intrigue, sensitivity and a childlike quality present in all works”. Not sure about the “Childlike” aspect? Don’t really see that. there certainly is intrigue, and yes, the spontaneity is an attraction, the energy in the marks, the personal nature of it all. I have said all this before but we do continue to enjoy (if enjoy is the right word?) the way Josh Edgington’s art is evolving, his mark making, his line, his mistakes that never are mistakes, there are no mistakes here, the battles if that’s what they are… (Sean Worrall)

If you do feel like making a small donation – We bring all this art, music and underculture to you for free, we really don’t want to clutter up our pages with annoying adverts, no one wants that, but it does take up a lot of time, hours and hours of time. If you should feel like supporting Organ/Cultivate (for it is one in the same) by making a small donation to help keep all this flowing that would be delightful, thank you.
