Who needs who? No time for editorials, repeat, replete, reheat, let the actual music do the actual walking and the actual talking. Exact same thing as last time once again, another five (or so) slices of music that have passed our way recently, five slices of music cherry picked for your delight and however you like to slice it and of course it was the price of bird seed and…
Five? There’s something rather compelling about five. Cross-pollination? Five more? Is there another way? A better way? A cure for pulling flying swordfish out of the clouds? Is there a rhyme? Is there a reason? What do reasons make? Five more? Cake oil? Snake oil? Bake the oil, everything must go somewhere and no, we never do and the proof of the pudding is in that proof reading. When we started this thing, oh never mind, it doesn’t matter why we started this damn thing, we never should have done and like we asked last time, does anyone bother reading the editorial? We do really try to listen to everything that comes in, we are very (very) very very picky about what we actually post on these fractured pages or about what gets played on the radio or indeed what we hang in a gallery.
Cut to the chase, never mind the editorial, skip this bit, there’s music further down the page, five or so pieces of music that have come our way in the last few days and what’s Wordsworth? Just the basic facts and links and those sounds (and visuals), that’s surely all you need from us on these Five pages we reguarly post?
Here we go, five more slices of music that have recently come our way, the second five of a new year, this time we start somewhere in Copenhagen…

1: Anastasia Kristensen and a just released first taste of an album that’s on the way in May via Dutch label Intercept – “Across releases for labels including Houndstooth, Turbo and Warp offshoot Arcola, Anastasia Kristensen has always striven for something interesting, honing an individualistic vision along the way; and despite being a headline DJ at major arenas, she’s known for weaving curveballs into her compellingly colourful sets. This unpredictability is at the heart of what she does, and it culminates in the eccentric and captivating debut album Bestiarium Sombre”. More via Bandcamp or her Instagram thing

2: Juli Deák – “Brisk, the title track from Polish-Hungarian flautist Juli Deák’s debut album, draws listeners into a vivid, physical sound world. Performed on a single flute, rhythm, harmony, and melody unfold simultaneously, reshaping the traditional image of the instrument. Driven by restlessness, the piece lives in contrasts: minor and major, fast trills and slow singing lines, raw overblowing and soft, airy sounds. Brisk is intimate, powerful, and deeply contemporary.
The Polish-Hungarian flutist and saxophonist Juli Deák bridges classical, contemporary, and jazz music through tender melodic lines, circular breathing, and percussive effects. With over 15 years of musical experience, her sound is deeply rooted in the classical tradition while embracing experimentation, improvisation and folk influences.
The recording and the video is from a live session recorded in the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Budapest, on April 14th, 2025. Composed and performed by Juli Deák. More via Bandcamp or her Instagram feed
3: Holy Fuck and a film of the Canadian band playing Evie as part of the At Work series. Recorded Live-Off-The-Floor in Toronto Canada, at Mooi Space, May 2025. The songs selected are from their 2026 album Event Beat, out March 27th. Here’s the Bandcamp thing…
4: XCOMM and a video of a couple of tracks, if you want the lowdown on them there here’s a link or two to take you to the ferocious hardcore punk band from Venice Beach, California as they fuse old-school intensity with a modern sense of chaos and clarity. Formed in 2023, the band features frontman Michael Gatto, guitarist Jay Vargas, bassist Adan Escoto, drummer Revel Ian, and DJ/sampler Hunter Grogan. Here’s the Bandcamp for those two songs in the video. I rather like them, they just supported Foo Fighters, no one deserves to have to do that, their debut album slated for release later this year…
5 Vial More from self proclaimed Minneapolis-based indie punk band who sound rather metalish to some of us. More of that new album…
More of Juli Deák’s debut album…

And while we’re here, that day in 1979 when Peter Hammill got himself roped in on some advert voicing for a radio station…
