ORGAN THING: The Yummy Fur have a new album, something that is fast forward condensed and good, something in the middle of something you’ll want to be in the middle of, this is still very much The Yummy Fur but but but is there (even) more to it and them this time?

“When Upset The Rhythm told us they needed a video for our song, Wanda, we’d already made three videos since March and were completely videoed out. Luckily our Argentinian pal, Roberta Cumbiancera, offered to fly down to Santa Monica from Portland with her trusty camera operator, Juani Manzo, and film us a mini movie entirely for kicks on zero budget.

The song is a love letter to the ‘female Cassavetes’, actress and independent film maker, Barbara Loden, who made one movie, the super rough and wonderful Wanda (1970). Our own Wanda was shot partly on Super 8 and stars Roberta’s fellow Argentinian, the actress and tv presenter, Daniela Aita. When I saw the final cut I thought Roberta had been channeling Agnes Varda’s Vagabond and Bresson’s Mouchette but she assures me the only influences were the Jean Genie video and Wanda itself. Watching her cutting about Hollywood & Vine and the shabby fairgrounds of Raymond Chandler’s Santa Monica, Daniela definitely has the luminous glow of Cyrinda Foxe under The Mars Hotel.

Beyond the faded 1920s > 1970s Hollywood glamour, there’s more than a touch of autobiography in Roberta’s Wanda. Her first film, Navidad de Reserva (also starring Daniela Aita), was a brutal study of what it is to be a working class immigrant slaving as a nanny for the affluent housewives of Portland. Her Wanda video is what happens when that same person tries to flap their wings and escape.

‘I showed it to my mom and at the end I gasped because I discovered some shit about myself just like Bowie said happens when you make good art. I just realised there was so much of me in the story. I live on my own and find myself on adventures that quickly turn so boring because I am alone.’”
