VOTE BOB AND ROBERTA SMITH! YES, REALLY!
“The arts proved a thorn in Michael Gove’s side throughout his four-year tenure as Education Secretary. Now, one acclaimed artist is taking protests a step further by running against him in the next general election. Bob and Roberta Smith, the pseudonym of Patrick Brill who specialises in painted placards, is to run against Mr Gove in his Surrey Heath constituency.
Although Mr Gove left his post as Education Secretary, following a Cabinet reshuffle in July, to become the Tory’s chief whip, Brill said he is running against him as the “architect” of the policies that have marginalised arts in schools
“He has become a fulcrum to say the arts are really important in this country,” he said. “It’s a chance to say a lot of positive things about the arts rather than just bashing politicians.”
One of the artist’s best known works is Letter To Michael Gove, a huge placard carrying a diatribe of almost 1,000 words. However, he said his decision to run was sparked by recent comments made by Mr Gove’s ministerial successor, Nicky Morgan, over how students could be held back by studying arts subjects. Mr Brill said: “What she said has got everyone fired up again. I thought: ‘I’ve got to stand’.” .. read more here for we blatantly did a cut ‘n paste job and stole all that important news from the Independent. Blame the theft on bad education or something like that, my teacher told me to shut up and go sit in the corner with my paint brushes when I said I wanted to be an artist, told me to come back when I was in touch with the real world, so I told him I wanted to be a train driver, he said that was far more sensible, he was probably right wasn’t he? .
Rather hesitant to call this new album from L’Effondras a post rock thing, the prospect of more post rock bores the pants off me. This clearly is post rock, but this has a little more in terms of a slightly different expanse, this has slightly different colours, this had a subtle adventure when most stick the now rather tired path, when this repeats it feels inviting, it feels like you want to go with them rather than leave them to it. The self-titled album is mostly at the same pace and mostly the same textures, a refined palette though, a carefully chosen placement of those colours, this repetition is good, the slow build that it an obvious post rock thing, actually you could argue that most of it is, on the surface, obvious post rock, it has something though, that little something extra. We thought they were called O back on Monday, lost in the French language of an instrumental album. The story of O could have tied us up in all kinds of other ways. L’Effondras are from Lyon, their new album is out later this December….
