Thing of the Day? So back at the end of June seminal Californian punk legends announced they v” they will reunite for a series of shows this fall with a new singer: former Jesus Lizard frontman David Yow.. At the time of the announcement, The band said they would, according to drummer Stephen DePace, “tour Italy in November with Yow, and will possibly play shows in San Francisco and Los Angeles with this lineup around the same time”. Now you might argue that Flipper without Bruce Loose just isn’t really Flipper, but hey, if you’re going to evolve and go on then we can’t think of anyone better that David Yow to step up! Here’s the band’s official statement from Bruce “Loose” Calderwood
Bruce Loose is retired from Flipper! He has suffered from a broken back since 1994. It has gotten to the point now where Bruce finds it impossible to continue with performing and touring.
We want to thank Bruce for being part of what was a hell of a run from 1979 to now!
With all the ups and downs and craziness that is all part of the punk rock package we managed to make “music history” with this band. For that and all the fun we had, we are eternally grateful.
Bruce is moving on to do solo projects and Ted Falconi along with Steve DePace are going to carry on with long time 5th Flipper, Bruno DeSmartass on bass and we will be performing 3 shows in Italy with David Yow, formerly of Scratch Acid and The Jesus Lizard.
We tell you all this today because footage of the David Yow fronted Flipper live in San Francisco has started to emerge on line. True “San Francisco’s oddball punk heroes” Flipper have played reunion shows intermittently over the past few years. And yes, okay, Flipper with a different front man is well, a little wrong, but hey, David Yow! Yeah I know I generally moan about bands reforming and going on too long and not knowing when to retire with good grace, I generally avoid reformed re-fried bands, but the idea of a David Yow fronted Flipper kind of excites, there were very few things better than The Jesus Lizard in full flow, and there’s few things better than that slowed down ground break punk rock proto-grunge of Flipper……..
And here comes the raw footage of Flipper from October 10th 2015…..
performing Ever from the 1981 Generic Flipper’ LP at The Bottom Of The Hill in SF
And as the person who posted that last video dedicated it to the memory of Will Shatter, we will as well (Will helped out a good friend of ours back there, it isn’t forgotten)
Here, have some classics… .
More Organ things later… probably….
