Diane Goldie’s world is a gloriously, bright one, a colourful one, a welcoming one, a wonderfully positive one, her world is an inspiring one, at least the one she is presenting to us with so much joy last night is.  Diane Goldie’s world isn’t about misfits,  more about the people who don’t want to fit, who are brave enough to not want to, the people who don’t want to blend in and wear the logo.  Diane Goldie’s work is about questions, it asks us why we’re so desperate to conform, to blend in, to keep it bland, why do we need approval? This is brilliant, the place is alive, colour everywhere, beautifully stitched detail.

Artist, Feminist, former children’s entertainer and maker of wearable art , Diane Goldie is exhibiting her rather unique world at the Vaults Gallery, Waterloo, SE London , the very busy very bright show opened last night,  Tuesday 3rd of November. The show runs until Sunday 7th. A band, Z-Star, played outside the gallery, in the Leake tunnel, underneath Waterloo station, people danced, people paraded, people painted outside, people talked to each other, tribes gathered, Diane was celebrated, her clothes worn..

Her world is one of “colour, politics, vibrancy , quirkiness and intrigue”, there are strange crochet anthropomorphic creatures, painted goddess like soft sculptures, life paintings, drawings, puppets , highly charged political feminist paintings, and most of all wearable art, ranging from jeweled textile neck pieces to flamboyant kimonos. Flamboyant is the word, Diane’s world is a flamboyant one. .

And because Diane believes in the cooperative, the coming together and the supporting of each other, the show includes work by her friends (her tribe) including that of renowned outsider artist and “Fabulous Fashionista” Sue Kreitzman, Stuckist painter Ella Guru, “Latex performer extraordinaire” Marnie Scarlet, portrait pop painter John Lee Bird, performance artist Amy Kingsmill, performance costume designer and artist Anne Sophie Cochevelou and more, the place really is alive with art, with doing, people of all ages running around getting involved…

The show is a triumphant riot of colour, of creativity, this is a show that gets on with defiantly doing it . An exciting art show in a glorious underground gallery with lots and lots (and lots) of people doing things. Doing things in a tunnel where others unconnected with the show are painting, dancing, skating, hooping and generally doing their own tribal things, and somehow it all comes together as one whole colourful thing….  a brilliant Tuesday night, a flamboyant opening and a very positive show.  Glorious creativity, her’s is a wonderful world, this was an opening you really needed to be at, still time to go see it though, still time to join in, to quote Ealla Guru, “Diane Goldie really smashed it last night”” .  (SW)

Diane Goldie’s show runs at the Vaults Gallery, Leake Street, Waterloo, SE London , until Sunday 7th November.  .

A collection of images from the show, the tunnel, a bit of leaf growth, well it was a little bit about joining in (and a #365ArtDrop or two) click on an image to enlarge or run the slide show…
