OrganThing of The Day: Momma, a slice of just right alt.pop music, some of us around these parts like pop, some of us love the fact that Andy Warhol once did an album cover for Billy Squire, that was real pop art, we love pop, Charlie’s Angels were pure pop, so were Disco Pistol, Angel Cage will hunt us down if we claim they were. Pop is art, art is pop, Momma make great pop music, alt.pop maybe but proper pop all the same. “Rockstar” is the new single, out on Polyvinyl and Lucky Number. Momma are Allegra Weingarten, Etta Friedman, and Aron Kobayashi Ritch, they make fine pop art. Momma can be found via that link you just passed or via their Bandcamp page. They sound like a lot of bands we’ve heard before, a lot of bands some of us around here still rather like…
“Momma, the Brooklyn-based band led by singers/guitarists Allegra Weingarten and Etta Friedman, today announce their debut UK shows and release their anthemic new single “Rockstar”, another slice of infectiously poppy grunge that again marks the band out as one of this year’s most undoubtedly exciting prospects.
Its accompanying must-watch video – directed by LA-based duo Batshit! (filmmakers Ben Joyner & Henry Drayton) – is pure fun, brimming with unbridled energy as it pays tongue-in-cheek tribute to Friedman and Weingarten’s rock music comedy favourites like Josie and the Pussycats, School of Rock and Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny.
“Etta and I wanted to write a song about making it big, and becoming rock stars. We didn’t want to take anything too seriously, lyrically, or musically. We just wanted the song to sound big,” says Weingarten. “We thought it would be cool to have our own little rockumentary condensed in a 3-minute music video. It’s also kind of like a manifestation – I think we shamelessly want all of these things to happen in our careers.” “Rockstar” is the band’s latest single following November’s dynamic, energizing “Medicine,” their first for new label home Lucky Number.
Produced and mixed by bassist Aron Kobayashi Ritch, these two songs mark Friedman & Weingarten’s first tracks written and recorded in the band’s new hometown of Brooklyn, New York.
Momma have also announced their much-anticipated first UK dates, the band will be headlining London’s Brixton Windmill on Tuesday 10th May and Manchester’s Yes on Saturday 14th May and open for Illuminati Hotties in Leeds on Friday 6th May. The band will also be supporting both Wet Leg and
Snail Mail on a series of US dates and will be announcing additional UK shows alongside further news on their upcoming album, soon.”
Hang on, need another spoonful….
