Organ Thing of The Day, a quick one today for we are in full Art Car Boot Fair mode now with just four days to go, We’ll bring you flowers and things, Help pass your time on the other side of this weekend’s fair that happens in real life on Saturday and online for the whole weekend. I’m busy with Electric paintings, for the Electric edition of the Art Car Boot Fair so jsut a quic one today. The first ten of an ongoing series of Electric paintings, pieces painted during the time it takes to listen to a very electric album just once. I’m rather enjoying the challenge on this series so far, hopefully, all being well there will be a few more before the Art Car Boot Fair comes around on May 14th.

The Electric Art Car Boot Fair is just a few days away now, as I’ve already said in a previous post, it is always an honour to be invited to participate. “Electric” is the theme this time and to me electric says kranked up guitars, the smell of over heating amps and loud loud rock music. Electric music isn’t polite, it isn’t quiet. Electric music is raw, visceral. Music is emotional, something you can taste, that lectricity in the air. As we work our way towards the fair I shall be throwing on a very electric album, turning it way up and while it plays, I shall be painting, interpreting the cover of that album on a fresh blank canvas, the paintings will take no longer than one play of the album, the painting has to be fast, alive, reactionary, instant, flawed, the paintings need to be as raw as the music.

The “Electric” series of paintings has been evolve in the weeks leading up to the fair and will be available first at the Art Car Boot Fair that happens both online and in real life at Kings Cross, here London on May 14th. More via Art Car Boot Fair in terms of both events. It is a very picky process, this isn’t about my favourite albums, I do love all these albums and covers I’m painting, but it has to be about the electricity, that thing that can’t be explained.

The original electric paintings will be available first at the real life Art Car Boot Fair event at Kings Cross (London) on May 14th, the on line event happens on the same day or indeed opens on same day and goes on throughout the weekend. There will be limited edition print versions of the Electric series available only via the online version the Art Car Boot Fair. I suspect this series of paintings will go on beyond the fair. Notes on all the paintings so far…

1: “If You Want Blood…” – Acrylic on canvas, 15cm x 15cm x 1cm (April 2022) – A new painting, the first in a new series of Electric paintings ahead of May’s Electric edition of the Art Car Boot Fair. Album covers interpreted and concluded during the time it takes to listen to that album (very loudly) just once.

2: “Kiss Alive” (April 2022) – Acrylic on canvas, 15cm x 15cm x 1cm – The second in the series of Electric paintings painted ahead on next month’s Electric Art Car Boot Fair. Album covers interpreted and concluded during the time it takes to listen to that album (very loudly) just once.

3: “Kick Out The Jams” (April 2022) – :15cm x 15cm x 1cm – The third in an ongoing series of Electric paintings. A series of pieces painted in the time it takes to play the album concerned (very loudly) once. Only the most wired most electric of raw albums. Raw and instant, fast music, fast painting, loud, fast, raw, no time to think about it. MC5’s 1969 album Kick Out The Jams really has to be one of the most electric albums ever made

4: “Circle Jerks” (April 2022) – Acrylic on canvas, 15cm x 15cm x 1cm – The 4th in the ongoing series of Electric paintings painted ahead of May’s @art_car_boot_fair. Pieces painted quickly during just one play of the chosen album which of course meant this one had to be an extra fast interpretation of their rather short 1980 album…

5: “What Is This?” (April 2022) – Acrylic on canvas, 15cm x 15cm x 1cm – The fifth in the series of Electric paintings painted ahead on next month’s Electric Art Car Boot Fair. Album covers interpreted and concluded during the time it takes to listen to that album (very loudly) just once, the first beautifully raw Black Sabbath album has something very special to it

6: “Judas – Electric Painting Number 6” (Acrylic on canvas, 20cm x 20cm x 1cm – The sixth in an ongoing series of Electric paintings. Interpretations of electric album cover painted during no more than one play of the album. Bob Dylan’s Bringing it all back home, his first electric recordings, lasts 46 minutes so I had and the luxury of almost half hour more than I did for the Circle Jerks album last week.

7; “Double Dare” (April 2022) – Acrylic on canvas, 20cm x 20cm x 1cm – The seventh in an ongoing series of Electric paintings painted during just one listen to a very Electric album or record(is this one an album or EP). This beautifully raw positive piece of powerful Bikini Kill challenge lasts just 15 minutes and 49 seconds and every second was needed (far more than that Motley Crue mirror!)

8: “Electric Painting no. 8 In On The Kill Taker” (April 2022) Acrylic on canvas, 20cm x 20cm x, 1cm – The eighth in an ongoing series of Electric paintings, interpretations of very electric albums painted during just one listen of the album. Fugazi’s gloriously alive 1993 album “In On The Kill Taker” lasts 43 minutes, Fugazi made some of the most vitally electric albums of the late 80s and early 90s, Could have been any one of a bunch of albums they made around that time but I liked this cover art best.

9: “Get In Line” (April 2022) – Acrylic on canvas, 20cm x 20cm x 1cm – The 9th in an ongoing series of “Electric” paintings, interpretations of album covers, very electric albums, painted during just one play of that album and painted ahead of May’s Electric edition of the @art_car_boot_fair. This is an interpretation of London band Atom Seed’s 1990 debut album “Get In Line”. Some of you might know I painted the original cover painting for Get In Line, I wasn’t sure how this one would go, it is a particularly personal album and piece of art. I was rather heavily involved in Atom Seed back there. I was thinking about the band and those days and the tours and the adventures this week, one year on from the awful news of the loss of frontman and good friend Paul Cunningham. I did do the art for all their singles and their one album (there is cover art for the unreleased second album kicking around here)

10: “Electric Painting number 10 – Why” – (April 2022) Acrylic on canvas, 20cm x 20cm x, 1cm – The tenth in an ongoing series of Electric paintings, interpretations of very electric albums painted during just one listen of the album. The Pop Group’s “Y” is alive with electricity, their 1979 Avant garde, Experimental Post-Punk take on things. I am being very picky about the albums chosen here.

11: “Damnations – Electric Painting 11” – (May 2022) – Acrylic on canvas, 20cm x 20cm x 1cm – There was and still is something very electric about Carter USM’s sound and the wordplay. 101 Damnatons always had some extra in terms the raw electricity…

12: “Cut – Electric Paint 12 – (May 2022) – Acrylic on canvas, 20cm x 20cm x 1cm – The Slits, as Johnny Rotten once said, the women were kicking our butts in terms of punk rock back there”, THe Slits, X Ray Spex, there electricity was there at te end fhe end of the 70’s

13: “In The Court – Electric Painting 13” (May 2022) – Acrylic on canvas, 20cm x 20cm x 1cm – The first King Crimson album from the end of the 60’s, some of the first and stil lfinest moments in terms of experimental groundbreaking prog rock, the electricity is there., as are te flaws in this painting as a result of the need to paint it during the time it takes to listen to the album rather loudly just once…

14: Watch this space…. Magma maybe? People are requesting I paint particular album covers, the feedback is welcome as is the input, but I am being very very (very) picky and no, unless you happen to hit on the right album, I really can’t take commisions on this series.
