ORGAN PREVIEW: Freedom for Leytonstone! Freedom is an exhibition of sculpture and installation out in the woods as part of this year’s Leytonstone Arts Trail over in London E11…

Freedom is the title given to this year’s event in the grounds of Wanstead Quaker House, Freedom is part of the 2022 Leytonstone Arts Trail. Once again curated by Mary Knight and Brett Banks, the exhibition of sculpture, installation and work of a 3d work nature will happen in the woods at the back of the meeting house . The outdoor event in the trees at the back of the meeting house has been a highlight of the trail that started back in 2008, for a number of years now.

As well as the installations in the Quaker House grounds, co-curator Brett Banks will be running a stone carving workshop from 1pm until 5pm from Monday 4th until Friday 8th.  Meanwhile Helen Porter will be holding a filmed event on Saturday 9th at 2 p.m. Called Shine, people are being asked to bring shoes to be polished or to polish themselves and be filmed talking about their shoe shining experiences. Helen said: ‘For a while I have had the idea, either for a film, or live art, of inviting a variety of people to come and clean/polish their shoes and talk about their early memories of shoe cleaning, special or routine events they have cleaned their shoes in preparation for, and for their own recommendations of preparing to face the world.  The shoe cleaners would be a variety of people from all walks of life – “preparations are underway for a big day, and shoes must be shined to meet the occasion”…”meet ordinary people preparing to put their best foot forward”.
