Emma Harvey

One hour and thirteen minutes in gets you to X Ray Spex and Nancy’s interview with artist Emma Harvey, not that you shouldn’t start at the very begining. You probably already know who Emma Harvey is; artist, painter, feminist and co-founder of Cultivate Gallery, soemthing very much associated with Organ of course Now Nancy is a monthly show on London’s Soho Radio. Host Nancy Dewe Mathews casts a feminist eye over art, culture and current affairs, bringing you reviews, news and interviews and a tune ot two along the way and yesterday’s show featured a rather informative interview with Emma

This month’s Now Nancy show went out yesterday morning, It all started off with an introduction the show and that distinctively defiant drum pounding that kicks off Bikini kill’s Rebel Girl, no one screams like Kathleen Hanna, it still sounds as fresh now as it did that very first time way back there in the last century, Bikini Kill was a selection from our Emma Harvey of course (besides Emma’s selections, the music on the show was a little lame or tame or polite or well, just a little unadventurous, the show isn’t really about the music though, it is mostly a spoken word show, discussions, interviews. Like we already said, Emma was one of Nancy’s guest’s on this week’s edition and right now as I listen back Nancy is talking about medical misogyny and the menopause with one of her other guests and apparently we are just about heading in the right direction according to author and doctor Christie Watson. Page 43 of Christie’s new book Quilt on Fire is read out, (always worth checking out page 43 of a book), and well, you don’t need me to tell you what was said, go listen to the show,  you might learn a thing or two or at least get an interesting perspective.

Actually the whole on Nancy’s show is worth your time, must admit, even though I’ve come across Nancy Dewe Mathews as an art critic before, I’ve not listen to the show. I can’t say I found the current Hardcore group exhibition at the Sadie Coles Gallery as rewarding as she did, always good to hear other opinions and perspectives though and Nancy certainly makes some valid informed observation and more importantly, makes them in a passionate way. Most London art critics I listen to lack that passion, you never feel that art excites them, that their opinions are more about themselves than the art they’re coldly talking about, surely art is about reaction, emotion, I want to hear critics showing some kind of passion, I don’t want aloof wordery and and I must say when it comes to most of London’s seld-appointed art critics I’m with Sean Scully. So yes, as a new listener I might just be going back and exploring some of Nancy’s previous shows. Although I must say it sounded like Emma’s selection of Current Organ favourites Sissyfit shocked her a little. Sissyfit, as we’ve several times on these fractured pages, are brilliant, they’re vital, they’re right here right now, they’re an exciting call to arms. I though the Emma Harvey interview was rather good, I’m probably bias but I am a fan of Emma’s work, I though Nancy got a lot out of her, not really my place to say though, the interview is just past the hour mark, here’s the Mixcloud of the show, have a listen, find out for yourself…
