We do need to get with the Thing of The Day thing, it was meant to be rather simple, just an Organ thing every day, today there are geese. Nite Hive have announced details of the third release on the label: The Secret Lives of Birds by musician, sound designer, field recordist and DJ, Patricia Wolf – out on 28 June 2024.

The new album by Portland, Oregon-based Patricia Wolf expresses her love of birds, a fascination which began alongside her field recording practice when she began to wonder which birds were singing and calling in her recordings. Through her research to identify these sounds she became a bird watcher, a ravenous seeker of bird facts, and a proponent for their protection and conservation. With the subject of birds becoming an all-encompassing passion, her music naturally took a turn to reflect on the birds she’s met both at home and on tour.

The album was launched on Earth Day (yesterday) with three tracks, including ‘Greylag Geese Through the Listening Sculpture at Tjörnin’ where environmental recordings from Tjörnin lake in Reykjavik meld with glassy tones to create an amplified landscape. You can hear three of the tracks right now via Bandcamp

“Across the album, Patricia dives deep into her personal library of field recordings and birding experiences, writing songs that show the variety of emotions and wonders that birds bring. Using electronics and field recordings, Wolf celebrates the avian world with sentimental and melodic musings on their behaviour, beauty, and the challenges that they face in the Anthropocene. Even if you’re not yet acquainted with the secret lives of birds, these 12 tracks offer a warm welcoming point of entry”.

Patricia Wolf’s The Secret Lives of Birds is out on cassette and digitally via Nite Hive on 28 June 2024.
