Hyper Gal – After Image (Skingraft Records) – That opening track almost feels like they’re playing with you, seducing you, pulling you in, toying with you, letting you get comfortable before they start turning the screw, you know it must be coming, this is the calm before the storm and a harmless The Luncheon on the Grass before the Rush starts to build. There’s a hundred tabs open here, page upon page waiting for someone here to get back and give it the demanded attention and they do keep pecking at your head and demanding you go listen to their genuinely head-pecking music and that Kraut flavoured start to Over Fussy is delicious, kind of frantic Autobahn fast lane get out of the way we’re coming through and what is she shouting or singling about? Crazy Japanese girls loose in your head and hammering to get out (or further in). Yes, I know, this should have been reviewed weeks ago, months ago, while the iron was hot, don’t review it yet he said, than a thousand others things shout for attention and down the pile it goes and the tab stays open for months and I’ll do it tomorrow, just need to throw paint at this and what? They’re in town next week? This has been out a month already?
You need to be in the right place, the right frame of mind, the right, well no, scrap that, it works every time, every single time, this is a delight, all that drilling and pecking and going off and things, gabber gabber prog prog, hey ho, let’s go! The real art of noise, of pop art, or repetition and I tend to repeat myself when under stress and they do peck in such a beautiful beautiful beautiful way. Sugary sweet vocals and deafening instrumentation indeed, like Deerhoof with pneumatic drills and butter that wouldn’t melt. but there are calms in their storms, there is that vital light and shade, The Luncheon on the Grass sounds like almost gentle Cardiacs-like percussion, not all of it is racket, most of it is glorious, some of it is glorious racket, lots of it is, colourfully so though, urgent, painterly. Over Fussy does sound like hyper-manic Kraut rock –
– “Springing from Osaka, Japan’s cultural centre and historical heart, comes HYPER GAL, a two-piece band consisting of visual artist Koharu Ishida on vocals and noise artist Kurumi Kadoya on drums. The minimalist duo make maximum impact – stripping music down beyond the bare essentials, to create shimmering, no wave pop from blast beat drums, glittery keyboard loops and ethereal bubblegum vocals – laced with velvet and firecrackers” –

It does sound like music to paint to, they say they “hold fast to their limited palette”, it doesn’t sound limited here and anyway, they use it in a different way, their brush strokes are never too obvious, according to their Bandcamp page last time around we said “Intensely good. A beautiful challenge, a noise, relentless, not an onslaught, always inviting, like they want to pull you in rather than chase you away. Actually, this is joyous” and that basically is this time again only more so, more of everything, even more maximalist, beautiful so and we should have said this weeks ago but we are in time for their UK dates and the fact that they will be playing a reasonably short walk away from us this time next week… We should go, so should you, they’ll certainly go off and things. Flicker sounds like a mad fairground ride you’d need to cling onto for dear life, it sound like it would be worth getting on, Ooparts sounds like it really is going to go off and things… A beautiful noise.. You’ll love it! (sw)

If you do feel like making a small donation – We bring all this art, music and underculture to you for free, we really don’t want to clutter up our pages with annoying adverts, no one wants that, but it does take up a lot of time, hours and hours of time. If you should feel like supporting Organ/Cultivate (for it is one in the same) by making a small donation to help keep all this flowing that would be delightful, thank you.
