Hyper Gal – Shacklewell Arms, London, October 2024 – Too many places to be at the same time tonight and it really has been a head pecker of an annoying day, the only way to serious deal with the peck peck peck pecking of it all is to go get seriously pecked at up the road in Dalston. Missed the support and the duo that is Hyper Gal have just taken to the stage for their London debut by the time we get there. It might be that if you just write it down and say it was a drummer and just one other person making one hell of a noise that you might think how many times can you go see that? But they never are the same, these dynamic duos, some kind of fusion of two people into one personality, it always seems rather satisfying, compelling.
Tonight, as well as being compelling it is also relentlessly intense, gloriously so. Sonically, it we want to get lazy about it all, they are almost Lighting Bolt, Melt Banana meets Lightening Bolt, but there’s something else in there all of their own, that vital ingredient and while they fly it all right at you they do it in what seems like a very natural, unforced way. They’re brilliant actually and judging by the reaction of the room we’re not the only ones thinking so. There’s some kind of looping and triggering, some kind of I’m not sure what and it wasn’t anywhere near as harsh as expected, not the uncomfortable ride anticipated, I mean it was a full on attack, they didn’t hold back, what they do is very electric, high pitched, there is electricity visibly zapping around but they’ve got warmth in there as well, they invite you in rather than fight you off, it has personality, extra colour in the details….
and what is she doing with her leg up on the drum? Oh I see, muting it like some kind of performance artist using her drum kit as some kind trapeze=like frame. The two of them have real personality up there on the bare stage, just the two of them on a sparse stage, in the zone, in their zone, hardly saying a word, hardly needing to.smiling like crazy at the end, they know things have been good, we know things have been good, oh yes, it was good… (sw)
