Fresh from taking part in Cultivate’s #43Artists show |(an on-line hosted here on on these Organ pages of course) the fine artist known at Girl Shit is the latest to be subjected to our Thirteen Question interrogation. Now just like a real life supERhero (and who’s to say Girl Shit isn’t a real life super hero?) we can’t be revealing real names, well maybe we can, I just failed to ask her, I kind of like the idea of a real life superhero cutting up pieces of paer down in her studio down there in Brighton, I like the idea of a superhero with her manifesto and her punk rock attitude – I can’t speak for all girls but i can own my narrative explore and share it. I’m female and see eyes roll into back of heads with the knowing look of blah blah blah girl shit… when I begin conversations as a woman artist with a female narrative. Some of my narrative is a shared one some is personal. Within my exploration is the sharing support and exploration of other women. Social media and Facebook in particular has allowed me to build communities for women through groups and my personal pages…
I like the way she plays with the imagery subcultures, the way she plays with those undercultures we like to talk of here at Organ, that world of zines and collage and gig posters and flyers, I like her motivation, her energy, that healthy hint of riot grrrl goodness, that feel of old school Pritt Stick powered cut’n paste that comes with her art…
Here then are the answers to the thirteen questions, twelve of them the same questions we’ve been firing at a number of artists in recent times, the thirteenth a little less generic, the art on this page are some of the pieces from the #43Artists show…
1: WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO?
A visual artist interested in female positive propaganda and narratives.
2: WHERE ARE YOU TODAY? WHERE ARE YOU MOST DAYS?
At home in lockdown but I have a home studio
3: WHO OR WHAT IS EXCITING YOU RIGHT NOW?
I love Instagram..it’s such a great community and way to discover great stuff..everyday something will pop up from someone I’ve not known before and I’ve met some wonderful artists through the platform. I also came late to podcasts but like to listen while I work. Currently listening to Talk Art. Last of the bohemians. The Lydian spin.
4: WHY DO YOU MAKE ART?
Million dollar question..it’s just been a part of me since I was a toddler I never imagined doing anything else. It’s part addiction ..always searching for that ‘ ultimate’ piece
5: HOW DO YOU WORK?
I studied fine art so I’m comfortable moving between mediums..at the moment there’s a lot of collage and oil painting
6: TELL US ABOUT THE ART YOU MOST IDENTIFY WITH?
I like work with a strong narrative. I like stories they make us human and I want to buy into someone’s story. There’s also something magical about oil paint so I’m in awe of how other people attempt to tame it. I like things that are pleasantly disturbing I want to be asked to work a bit for it.
7: WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR OWN WORK?
The small details that most people don’t notice and the small things that entertain me . The thought and attention ..attention to detail
8: WHAT DO YOU DISLIKE ABOUT YOUR OWN WORK?
The constant urge to do better and the fact I don’t own or can’t use photoshop..it would make life so much quicker as we live in a digital world. Also I can be a fiddler of perfection which makes painting slow sometimes.
9: WHAT HAS BEEN THE HAPPIEST MOMENT OF YOUR LIFE SO FAR?
My kids but I think happiness is small things rather than searching for a huge moment. I’m quite a happy person so finding beauty and excitement in things keeps the happy . Small acts of kindness are things I treasure
10: WHAT MAKES YOU ANGRY?
Cruelty, politics, apathy
11: WHICH SUPERPOWER WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE AND WHY?
The ability to smoulder like old school movie stars..everything about Wonder Woman but def Lynda carter TV era… I spent years trying to do the Spider-Man web shooting thing that would be cool…full on telepathy..being able to blast shit with your hands ..I like comics so the list is endless
12: WHAT COULDN’T YOU DO WITHOUT?
Music …there’s always music playing and books oh and sunglasses
13: WHAT IS IT ABOUT GIRL SHIT ANYWAY?
It’s just stuff..it’s unravelling all those glorious contradictions and repackaging them with a healthy sprinkle of irony humour aesthetics and a little f**k you attitude
And finally, silly question right now but any future shows or events coming up that you wish us to tell people about?
Hopefully I’ll be at Rebellion Punk Art show at Rebellion festival in August. It’s the only thing not cancelled yet. Music art and people, always a great combination.
