Deborah Roberts has a show called What about us? The show is happening right now as the first to happen at Stephen Friedman Gallery’s new New York gallery. We have covered the exhibition in a small way already (hey, we’d be covering it it is a big way if it wasn’t happening millions of miles away, our travel budget only stretches as a far as a 55 bus from Hackney to the West End) Do find Deborah’s work powerful, saw this exhibition shot posted on the gallery’s social media feed, hadn’t realised just how big her latest pieces were, really powerful

Hey, if you happen to be reading this in New York, the new gallery is found at 54 Franklin Street, New York, 10031. The show is on until 22nd December

“Our new gallery in Tribeca, New York opens ‘What about us?’, a solo exhibition by Austin-based artist Deborah Roberts. This is Roberts’ third exhibition with Stephen Friedman Gallery and her first in New York in over five years. Featuring some of the artist’s largest works to date, the show continues Roberts’ exploration of how systemic racism shapes the way Black children grow up in the world. Roberts is celebrated for depicting Black children and adolescents dressed in bright colours and patterns against white or black backgrounds. Her fragmented figures appear in mid-movement as they gaze or beckon toward the viewer. Interweaving collage and painting, Roberts’ multi-layered compositions offer a form of resistance as they explore the complexity of Black subjecthood in relation to race, identity, politics, and society”.

Meanwhile over here on this side of the Atlantic, an artist we’ve been chamioning for the last couple of months, Yasmin Grant, has an open studio this weekend as part of the Wimbledon Art Fair. The event kicks off today, Thursday 16th and runs through the weekend, it feels like more of an open studio thing than one of those sanitised cold-hearted art fairs. Here’s a quick photo taken while the artist was setting up. More about Yasmin here and a here’s a link to the fair . Yasmin Grant currently features in Mixtape No.6
