The now and again Five Pieces of Art thing feature again. Well why not (again)? Again and again (and again and again), all this art flowing past on various feeds or wrapped up in press releases or jumping off actual gallery walls or wrapping chips or passing on the side of those Whitechapel white vans. So we ask (again) why not five pieces of art every couple of weeks or so alongside everything else that appears on these fractured pages on a daily basis? Can you think of one good reason why not to? Well besides the time involved and the this and the that and the dancing around and the skins on the tins of paint and the man at the door…
Five pieces of art then, a semi regular feature, just five pieces of art that have passed our way in the last few days, nothing more (or less) than that. Nothing really to do with an upcoming show or anything else (although maybe they are), just a simple, semi regular five pieces of art feature. Let’s do it again.

1: Deborah Roberts – We should mention this, we do always feel positive about Deborah Roberts and her powerful art, right now she’s featuring in Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Collage at The Phillips Collection. ‘Multiplicity’ is the first major museum exhibition dedicated to contemporary collage, reflecting the breadth and complexity of Black identity and experiences in the United States. Roberts, whose ‘Tomorrow, tomorrow, and tomorrow’ is unique to the Phillips’s presentation, asserts, “With collage, I can create a more expansive and inclusive view of the Black cultural experience.” The piece is on view until 22 September and yes I know were over here in East London and you’re probably nowhere near but it is always good to know what’s going on in Deborah’s world, her work really is powerful.

2: Jeff Düngfelder aka Ümlaut is a multidisciplinary artist employing sound, film, photography and graphic design in his audio-visual projects, this is his cover art for the new Henrik Meierkord album (reviewed here – ORGAN: Albums, more music – Bed Maker, Babe Report, Scott Collins, Die Verlierer, Henrik Meierkord, London Underground and…). The album came out way, the art stood out, easy to take album artwork from granted, this cover deserved a mention…

And in some small way, the Jeff cover art feels a little like the work of Christopher Tansey, an artist who has figured in a number of the Cultivate online exhibitions over the past few years. Here’s a couple of shots from Christopher’s part in 2022 Routes North exhbition at Messums North.

4: Sean Scully has a new series of sculptures along Broadway Mall in New York, forming ‘Broadway Shuffle’, the artist’s new public art commission presented by The Broadway Mall Association. Seven large-scale sculptures – each one a unique vertical stack composed from various configurations of metal, stone and wood – are presented at seven locations along the green medians at the centre of Broadway from Lincoln Square to Washington Heights.

The artist recently said: “Broadway is legendary, and it has been mythologized in art and song. I called my project “Shuffle” after a dance, in the same way that Mondrian, another geometric immigrant, called his painting “Boogie Woogie.” I love the idea of my blocks and stacks punctuating the endless rhythm of Broadway.” (Photography by Tom Barratt, blatantly stolen from Sean’s social media). Wonder what Rael makes of the rhythm?

5: Eloise Govier – Just a couple of recent paintings from delicious Welsh painter Eloise Govier, it is always a pleasure to encounter her work, it is beautifully Welsh in the best of ways, she kind of makes me want to go home…

And here, before we go, a Julia Maddison piece in the window of Shipton Street Gallery as part of Cultivate’s More Cake show back in March of this year – ORGAN: Cultivate’s More Cake? Maximalism, chocolate caterpillars, Zelpa, scarlet ribbons, an artist-led art show in an old East London Shop, how was it for us?

Coming up next from Cultivate
