Less than a week to go now, the 2026 Art Car Boot Fair countdown is getting serious and for one day only, on the day, next Saturday September 5th (midday until 6pm) Julia Maddison will invite you to explore her wardrobe of love and despair. A regular on these pages and at our own (Cultivate) events and exhibitions, we last encountered Ms Maddison at our Cultivate curated show over in Crystal Palace earlier this year – And so Explore happened, another Cultivated art exhibition over at Free The Gallery, Crystal Palace, SE London. Another…

We (Cultivate) have been working with Julia for a dozen or so years now, ahead of this Saturday’s Art Car Boot Fair, here’s how it reads of Julia’s Art Car Boot Fair profile:
“Happiest when creating installations in unexpected, abandoned, or derelict spaces, Maddison collects, reworks and subverts the flotsam of forgotten lives, and is gradually building a kind of museum of domestic misery.
This year, she is bringing her wardrobe of love and despair to the Art Car Boot Fair; vintage slips and petticoats (garments once intimately entwined with their former owners), embellished with hand sewn messages of yearning and heartbreak.
She will also have a selection of her own old t-shirts, now emblazoned with words close to her heart; humanity, pacifist, activist, post menopausal, anarchy, etc. She describes these as portraits; something to hang on the wall, rather than just a boring old print, but you can, of course, wear them”.
