ORGAN: Five music things – Le nouveau single de Pamplemousse, a post-hardcore odyssey from In Der Welt, Glasgow’s Moni Jitchell, Meanwhile over in Bordeaux, Sbonk and from Rennes, Cratophane along with a touch of ChoKoLaTine…

Let the music do the talking, never mind the editorial bit at the top, same thing, different year. Another five slices of music thing again and however you slice it and of course it was sushi and here comes the introduction that heralds the latest Five Music Things thing and whatever the hell the five music thing is actually all about. Five? There’s something rather compelling about five. Cross-pollination? Five more? Do we need to do the editorial bit again? Is there another way? A better way? A cure for pulling flying pigs out of the clouds? Is there a rhyme? Is there a reason? Was there ever a reason? What do reasons make? Five more, everything must go and same as last time (and the time before that) five, and no, we never do and the proof of the pudding is in that proof reading. When we started this thing, oh never mind, it doesn’t matter why we started this thing and like we asked last time, does anyone bother reading the editorial? Does anyone ever actually look down the rabbit hole or is it all just method acting? We do really try to listen to everything that comes in, we do it so you don’t have to, we are very (very) very very picky about what we actually post on these fractured pages or about what gets played on the radio or indeed what we hang in a gallery. Cut to the chase, never mind the editorial, there’s loads of music further down the page, well five or so pieces of music that have come our way in the last few days and cut cut slash and cut it, who needs an editorial or words or worms in general? Just facts and links then. Here you go, play the music, grab your five, eat your greens, go eat some art, go eat some dirt and don’t forget whatever it was we said you shouldn’t forget last time…

Here we go, five (or so) more musical things in no particular order and for no particular reason other than…

Today we fell down an end of the year French rabbit hole brought on by !Gerard! and their live actvity that took us to Sbonk. We hadn’t been dow the hole for too long when In Der Welt shouted down about their new album

1: Pamplemousse – Le nouveau single de Pamplemousse “I’m not Dietsch” est disponible aujourd’hui en digital! Does it have a touch of Huge Baby around it? Find here on Bandcamp. “Pamplemousse is a power trio. A kind of abrasive noise blues band, somewhere between Rl Burnside, Unsane and George Michael”

.

2: In Der Welt have a new album out in February, “a post-hardcore odyssey in the form of a memento mori” is how they put it, actually they said “une odyssée post-hardcore en forme de memento mori (« souviens-toi que tu vas mourir »)”, but then they are yet another rather good French band. The final track on this latest album, the almost seven epic minutes of Slow Motion makes everything here worth your time, Slow Motion isn’t really that slow, it is full of motion, of emotion, it does end the album on a high, a fine fine end to an album that starts off with a storm of guitar, a wall of monster riffs, and, alas, that somewhat tedious cookie monster vocal style that really has become a little boring now. There is plenty of light and shade here though, episodes of quite in with the storm, places to catch breath before they go again with their big walls of sound, little bits that really catch your ear before they take you galloping off again. They do bury a lot of their beautiful details behind those vocals and I guess if you can put up with it or the style is to your taste then this is rally rather good.   There’s an excellent bit of detail in the middle of Control (yes it does have a Pulkas feel), it is the detail, the clever details that do bring this band to life and make them stand out, their hints of KayoDot colour, their power, their light and shade, their epic drama, the big big wall, and Slow Motion is just a brilliant seven minutes at the end.   Post metal, exreme metal, whatever you want to call it, In Der Welt do their chosen thing impressively well, this is a stand out from the very big crowd, this is rather recommended, I just can’t be doing with them vocals all the time, now and again, just not all the time, recommended though…

3: Moni Jitchell aren’t French, well as far as we know they’re not, they don’t sound French, they come from Glasgow. They’re on this very French page because they just said, on Facebook, that they’re opening for Extra Life tonight at the Hug and Pint, that sounds like an interesting coming together of loud and quiet – ORGAN THING: That unexpected return of Extra Life back in the Summer with a glowing new album and those UK and European live dates that are coming up in January…

.

I guess now would be a good time to remind you that Extra Life are on tour i the UK this week, something surely not to be missed…

.

4: Sbonk – Meanwhile over in Bordeaux, France, something that dates from late 2021 that only just came our way at the very end of 2022, we caught their name on a bill with GeRald! and if someone over there thinks they;re good enough to share a bill with GeRald! then they need to be chacked out. Here’s their Facebook page, you have their Bandcamp just there, spread the Sbonk! They;re busy all the way through January 2023 with bands like the excellent Baron Crâne, ChoKoLaTine as well as the rather excellent thing that is !GeRald!

.

5: Cratophane – From Rennes, France, come an instrumental angular rock power trio. They talk of a soundtrack for a comic book or a graphic novel

.

And we can never have too much of this video of ChoKoLaTine in action, we have posted this fine slice of mathed up Beatles before but you can’t have it too many times. here’s their Facebook page and someone from the Other Rock Show just stuck her head in here and yelled “who’s that?!” so I imagine they’ll be on a radio soemwhere sometime very soon.
