Mexrrissey have a new single, this is a good thing of course, ‘Entre Más Me Ignoras, Más Cerca Estaré’ (The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get), is to be released 27th January 2017 via Cooking Vinyl, here it is right now…..
.
Seems the band have become “a global phenomenon” thanks to their rather inspired Spanish-language re-workings of Morrissey songs. Released 27th January, ‘Entre Más Me Ignoras, Más Cerca Estaré’ (The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get) is taken from the band’s critically acclaimed debut album ‘No Manchester’ (Cooking Vinyl) and takes the original into romantic bolero territory. ‘No Manchester’ is a Mexican slang phrase meaning “No Way” or “Are you kidding me?”.
A Mexican supergroup, can we call them a supergroup? A band featuring people from some of North America’s finest bands, including Camilo Lara, from Mexican Institute of Sound and Sergio Mendoza from Orkesta Mendoza/Calexico, people apparently united in terms of their love for “the Mancunian musical prophet”, Morrissey.
“Mexrrissey’s rise has been swift (so says the press release), from a first try out show in Mexico City in April 2015, followed by a sold-out mainstage debut at the Barbican in London, a UK tour (including an emotional sold out Manchester show), as well as triumphant shows at BAM in New York and The Regent in Los Angeles. On its release, ‘No Manchester’ proved that although these songs were born in Manchester, they have now grown up, changed their hair and the clothes they wear and are living somewhere else under an assumed name.
.
“Moz,” as the former Smiths frontman is known by the devout, has inspired legions of Mexican and Mexican American fans with his immigrant story (he is the British son of Irish Catholic parents), moody lyrics about love and death mixed with powerful imagery and metaphors. There seems to be an intimate connection between Mexican immigrants, who straddle American and Mexican identities, and the “Irish Blood, English Heart” singer. “He was a migrant; he moved from Ireland to England, so he did the same thing we have done,” says band leader Camilo Lara. He goes on to say, “I always thought that there were these invisible lines between what Morrissey and Manchester represents and what Mexico City and Mexican pop culture has. And if these are tiny coincidences, we’re making them a little bit bigger on this occasion with a concert of broken hearts and forgotten dreams.”
“With immigration, a hot topic in the present climate, Mexicans are facing an uncertain future under the newly elected US President, Donald Trump. Camilo says, “We will need Trump to build the wall to keep Trump supporters away from humanity! I’m not surprised about it. If the high art in America is Kanye, Trump is the perfect president for these crazy times. Television is the drug of the nation.”
To coincide with the release of ‘Entre Más Me Ignoras, Más Cerca Estaré’ (The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get), Mexrrissey will embark on a five-date ‘Don’t Mention the Wall’ UK tour in January 2017.
