ORGAN PREVIEW: The sound of seven ice cream vans, a live installation at London’s Southbank for New Music Biennial…

So a random cat photo did actually attract more people to the site yesterday than an actual review usually does. We’ve actually been to art show openings every day of this actual week so far, like we actually keep on actually saying, we’re not going to waste our time writing about the openings that didn’t excite us in some way or other. Went to several more East London openings last night (where several people brought up the random cat and agreement on the thoughts on Wednesday night’s underwhelming opening)/ Was it worth going out again on Thursday? Was the art worth the effort? Well yes, art is always worth the effort, more in a bit, before that, some Ice Cream/ Well the ice cream made us smile, the event is quite a way away yet and I’m not sure if I’ve quite forgiven the Southbank for all their spinning against the skateboards and the art of the Undercroft yet, but the idea of seven ice cream vans does go along way to building a bridge or two (along with the fact that the Southbank directors had to eventually row back in terms of their destruction of the Undercroft in the end) Enough with the random cat and the actuallys and everything else, bring on the ice cream…

This nostalgic sound floods Southbank Centre’s outdoor spaces. A fleet of ice cream vans call out to one another in this pop-up which reimagines that ubiquitous childhood sound. The vans, each with their own individual harmony, create a mesmerising symphony of different clustered sounds and a shared soundscape for unsuspecting audiences. New Music Biennial is a showcase of composers and music creators who are pushing the boundaries of music in the UK. The festival, presented in association with the PRS for Music Foundation, is a unique snapshot of contemporary music in the UK across all genres: classical, world music, jazz, folk, electronic and even music for ice cream vans”. Is that really ALL genres though? Are we maybe missing a touch of rock there? No sign of anything like say the avant-prog flavoured Other Rock that so exciting right now, the new music of say Ni, Poli, Pinoil of those things going on in France for instance? Sure that’s as challenging as the brilliance of Gazelle Twin right now? Not quite “all genres” then….

“New Music Biennial 2019 comprises 20 new works, featuring new commissions from Gazelle Twin and Max de Wardener, Roderick Williams, Claire M Singer, Khyam Allami, Sona Jobarteh, Arun Ghosh, Sarah Tandy, Forest Swords, Klein, Dan Jones and Sam Eastmond alongside works composed within the last 15 years, including Shiva Feshareki’s acclaimed Dialogue for turntables and orchestra, commissioned by BBC Concert Orchestra in 2018. Across the weekend works are performed in a range of venues, inviting audiences to discover new music in an interactive way, both inside and outside of traditional concert hall settings. New Music Biennial is a PRS for Music Foundation initiative presented in partnership with Absolutely Cultured, Southbank Centre, BBC Radio 3 and NMC Recordings”.
