ART CAR BOOT FAIR PREVIEW pt2: 60’s Political Pop Artist Colin Self sneaks in under the radar this Sunday…


Like we said a couple of days ago, we’re in the zone now, the 2019 Art Car Boot Fair happens at the end of this week, those in charge of the boots have pulled together an exciting line-up of artists again this year, names you’ll know, names you might not have come across yet. .It all happens next Sunday afternoon, Sunday June 23rd, over in Kings Cross, London NW1 and like we’ve already said several times on these fractured pages, it is one of the highlights of the London art year. In the week leading up to this year’s event we shall be taking a look at one or two of the artists you might want to look out for on the day…


Colin Self

Kind of a big deal that Colin Self is at the fair this year, he’;s kind of sneaked in under the radar, “Richard Hamilton described Colin Self as ‘the best draughtsman in England since William Blake’. Although initially one of Britain’s most celebrated pop artists, he has remained elusive. Born in Norwich in 1941, Self studied at the Slade School of Fine Art but while other Pop artists of his generation celebrated consumerism, Self was drawn to the dark side of contemporary politics. His most celebrated work deals with the disturbing themes of nuclear war and Cold War politics” (Richard Saltoun Gallery). Kind of pleasantly surprised and kind of to see Colin Self’s name on the list of contributing artists we can expect to encounter at this year’s Art Car Boot Fair,

We’re told that “Colin Self has made a special print edition taken from his painting ‘Lovehearts’. There are only 30 in the edition, the first 10 are only £75, and the last 20 are £150….this is what’s generally known as a BARGAIN! There’s an original drawing too ‘Just Us Love Heart’ 10.8.1999 £2500”, and that is kind of what you can expect at the fair from a whole range of artists, painters, print makers and more, art that you normally just wouldn’t be able to get your hands on direct from the artists who will in turn be there doing the selling themselves, a rather unique day actually…

“As a student at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1961 to 1963 Colin Self received encouragement for his drawings and collages from the artists David Hockney and Peter Blake. Visits to the United States and Canada in 1962 and 1965 heightened his consciousness of Cold War politics and events such as the Cuban Missile Crisis and the CND marches led him to create highly-innovative prints such as Nuclear Bomber No.1 (1963), one of the earliest multiple plate etchings, and paintings such as ‘Waiting Women and Two Nuclear Bombers’ (1962–63). He also explored the relationship between violence and sexual threat in drawings of glamorous models and his iconic ‘Leopard-skin Nuclear Bomber’ sculptures.

Following his trip to the United States in 1965 he produced a series of drawings based on American nuclear fall-out shelters, Art Deco cinema interiors and of hot dogs, which he described as being ‘as important a 20th century development as (say) a rocket.’ His highly personal and distinctive style of drawing led the artist Richard Hamilton to call him ‘the best draughtsman in England since William Blake.’ During the 1960s Self showed with the Robert Fraser Gallery, London. As printmaker, Self has been a great innovator and was a central figure in the 1960s boom in printmaking. Drawing images from a variety of commercial sources, he created the Power and Beauty series of screenprints (1968) at Editions Alecto while his etching suite Prelude to the 1000 Temporary Objects of Our Time (1970–71) sought to provide a unique record of society in the event of its possible destruction…”
