ORGAN THING: The Berliner Philharmoniker close for lockdown with John Cage’s 4’33” – “Honestly, I never expected to be brought to tears by a performance” says Peter Hammill

“Honestly, I never expected to be brought to tears by a performance of 4’33”. But here we are. And,  indeed, there we went” – Peter Hammill

“Following measures taken by the Federal and regional authorities in Germany to contain the corona pandemic, the Philharmonie will be closed until 30 November 2020. In view of this, the Berliner Philharmoniker and their chief conductor Kirill Petrenko added an extra work to their concert on 31 October: 4’33” by John Cage, which consists entirely of silence and with which the composer wanted to inspire reflection on silence and music. With the recording of this performance, the orchestra and conductor are participating in the nationwide campaign #sangundklanglos / #alarmstuferot, which aims to draw attention to the plight of artists following the lockdown of cultural institutions..”

And as once again art galleries close and shows that didn’t even get off the ground are cancelled again and we painters and and musicians and actors and,,, well you know the rest. Powerful erformance and yes, oeter was right, tears (sw)
