Today’s Slice Of Art: well a rather big (in terms of size and more) did catch an eye at Frieze last week (was it only last week?), an Issy Wood painting, a portrait, on the wall of the Carlos/Ishikawa booth. her work really did come alive in the flesh, actually it looks rather alive online, that’s her painting at Frieze up there…
Today’s Slice Of Art then, we did say we would do this, maybe not every single day, more often than not though, there can never be too much art on these pages, here comes another slice…
A simple feature, just an almost daily slice of the art posted. Some days it might be a piece of art from someone we’ve been regularly covering on these pages (and maybe working with in terms of Cultivate), other days it might be something by an (almost) household name, on other days it might be a piece of art by someone who work we hadn’t known until the day we posted it.
Today we feature a painting by London based Issy Wood, a painting from 2025 called Self portrait 71…

The painting is currently on exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery here in London as part of their Artist Focus series;
“Featuring three presentations each year, Artist Focus invites contemporary artists to explore portraiture’s evolving role in art, society, and culture….”
The gallery say…
“This first presentation, Issy Wood: Self-Portraits showcases intimate self-portraits by British American artist Issy Wood (b. 1993). An artist, musician and writer, Wood examines intimacy, desire, consumer culture, and the complexities of contemporary identity in her varied output. Started in 2020, this series of self-portraits forms a particularly intimate side of her practice. Marked by her humour and distinctive approach to cropping and framing, these works carefully negotiate the appearance or concealment of the self through layers of distortion and masking. For the artist, self-portraits often function as substitutes for photographs of herself – the painted image standing in place of the real…”
The Issy Wood Paintings are in Room 32 in the first floor of the National Portrait Gallery until 28th February 2027. Entry into Room 32 is free, see a selection of istallation views here
