The Mayfair Gallery Hop is upon us again, the Spring version happens on Wednesday 6th April, thirty-five galleries across the West End of London will open their doors until 8pm. “Spring has sprung with sunshine and blossoms in London, and many of the exhibitions in the West End Gallery HOP! will provide you with a moment of reflection. From the flesh-like marble sculptures by Dorothy Cross at Frith Street Gallery to photographs by Ray Burmiston”. They might have jumped the gun with the Spring sunshine thing, fingers crossed the threatened snow and rain keeps away.
The Gallery Hop is always great, evening openings co-ordinated so you can stroll between the galleries and explore, the only downside for those of us travelling in to the West end after work to take advantage is that an 8pm close to it all is just a little early in terms of allowing us to take in even a fraction of it, unless we can get there early enough it tends to feel like the Hop is all over before it has begun – go on Hop people, go the extra hour like most galleries having an opening do, give those of us who have travelled in after work just a little more time.
The Hop is a kind of prelude to the Mayfair Art Weekenditself, “the annual celebration of the world’s internationally renowned gallery district”, takes place this year between 24th and 26th June, that’s the one with the green balloons (or whatever they choose to signpost the galleries taking part with this year), the Spring Hop is a smaller one night version, right now the West End galleries are rather alive at the moment, they are the establishment of course, they do mostly play it safe, they’re very rarely at the cutting edge but they are rather (politely) alive at the moment, the Hop is always rewarding if you put a little bit of legwork in… More later in week, well maybe, depending on what we find.
