Today’s Slice Of Art, we did say we would do this, maybe not every single day, more often than not though, there can never be too much art on these pages, here it comes again…
A simple thing, just an almost daily slice of the art posted (no way am I committing to doing it every day, I’m busy making art and a million other things). Some days it might be a piece of art from someone we’ve been regularly covering on these pages (and maybe working with in terms of Cultivate), other days it might be something by an (almost) household name, on other days it might be a piece of art by someone who work we hadn’t known until the day we posted it, Today we feature a painting that we happen to catch in a group show in London’s Cork Street last week.
David Dawson (born 1960) is a British artist, born near Pwllheli, North Wales. he’s been London based since the 80s… (Wikipedia)
We do want to keep the regular feature as simple as possible, we’re not going write thousands of words, just post a piece of art and maybe add a little bit in terms of why. Here’s a bit of an extract from a review of that show you can currently go see (for free) at London’s Flowers Gallery where it is part of a group show called New Landscapes until early August…
“I do rather like David Dawson‘s June storm in Wales, 2022, that one is probably my favourite piece in here, but then, like him I did leave Wales to becoming an art student in London, and I can smell the colour of the Welsh hills in that piece, his greens and greys that are never quite just green or grey, those greens and greys are just right, I do feel like I know where he was standing (although in reality I have no clue), I can hear Peter Prendergast in that landscape of David Dawson, I can hear rather a lot in that rather fine David Dawson painting, glorious light…”
Flowers Cork Street is found at 21 Cork Street, London, W1S 3LZ. The Gallery is open Monday to Saturday, 10am until 6pm. The Seeking New Landscapes exhibition runs until 8th August 2026.

There is an exhibition of David’s work on at the moment: Land, Sky, Light: New Landscapes by David Dawson – “A new exhibition by David Dawson is open at Gainsborough’s House Sudbury, Suffolk, UK. Land, Sky, Light features fifteen of David Dawson’s recent large-scale paintings of his native countryside in Montgomeryshire, Wales, painted en plein air. Painted outdoors during each season of the year, the artist then continues to work on them in his London studio before completing them back in the Welsh countryside, taking several years for each one. David left Wales for London where he was a student at the Chelsea School of Art and later becoming a model and assistant to Lucian Freud, these paintings represent an artist returning to his childhood home to explore the nature and solitude of its surroundings”.
