Today’s Slice Of Art, a feature that might not happen every single day, more often than not though, there can never be too much art on these pages, here comes another slice…
A simple feasture, just an almost daily slice of the art posted (no way are we committing to doing it every day, I’m busy making art and a million other things). Some days it might be a piece of art from someone we’ve been regularly covering on these pages (and maybe working with in terms of Cultivate), other days it might be something by an (almost) household name, on other days it might be a piece of art by someone who work we hadn’t known until the day we posted it. Today we feature a painting called Cornucopia and an artist by the name of Eleanor Johnson, a British painter whose works “explore the body as a site of transformation, instability and continual revision”.
“Working in layered oil paint, Johnson constructs compositions that seem to hover between formation and dissolution. Figures emerge, recede and reappear as traces of earlier marks remain visible, creating paintings that resist a fixed image. Her interest in pentimento, the visible revisions found in the drawings of artists such as Raphael, Michelangelo and Rubens, informs a process in which each stage of a painting remains active within the finished work”.
Eleanor Johnson’s painting Cornucopia is currently on view as part of a summer group exhibition, 12:12, at Rhodes Contemporary, her work will also feature in the gallery’s forthcoming exhibition, Chorus, opening this September, the gallery say: “Drawing on Baroque painting, mythology and hypnagogic imagery, Johnson’s practice is shaped by moments of excess and uncertainty. Bodies fold, merge and soften into fluid, biomorphic forms, while rich, translucent layers of oil paint allow surfaces to shift and evolve. Rather than resolving into a singular composition, her paintings retain the sense of an image still in motion”.
