Meanwhile over in New York, there’s a rather intriguing art show happening both online and in physical living breathing real life (and maybe in the blurred gap in between, isn’t online real life these days?), a show curated by Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnnikova. Billed as a Feminist Art Exhibition, the show features twenty-five pieces of art from all over the world personally selected by Nadya.
You can view the twenty-five pieces of on line right now, apparently the art will be shown during an NFT.NYC event on April 12th at Lume Studios in New York City. There is some kind of public vote thing going on, personally I’ve always detested the idea of having to vote for a piece art. Art surely isn’t about competition? It isn’t a sport, you can’t play one artist against another (and anyway don’t this public votes things tell you little more tha nwho has the most in terms of family and friends?). And no, I’ve not bought into the whole NFT thing either but hey, as I’ve said before on these fractured pages (in last month’s Sasha Styles piece actually), I’m still dealing with the notions of a operating four looms at the same time, that and the prospect of Waterloo Porridge if there’s no nettles to be picked.
The live part of the event at Lume Studio, Broadway, New York is on the 12th and will feature the twenty-five pieces of art in some kind NFT form, as well some Nadya’s own work (including the Putin Ashes collection). There will also be what were promised will be an “electrifying DJ set” by Nadya Tolokonikova and a surprise guest DJ.
“Nadya has selected 25 artists whose art will be showcased during an NFT.NYC event on April 12, 2023. The art will be subject to a 5-day vote on PalmDAO.app which is open from April 3rd to 7th, where the community will select a winner to receive, in addition to the showcase and mint, a $1,000 grant and a 12-hour display of their art onto Broadway avenue”. I wonder if the Imperial Aerosol King go see it? Will there be Carpet Crawlers, will the all-night watchmen have their fun?
You can vote for your favourite piece of art here if you’re so inclined, personally I’m just enjoying exploring the art via the website and finding an interest new (to me) artist or two alongside one or two already familiar names. Good to see London artist (and regular on these pages) Emma Harvey‘s piece selected and in there alongside a rather healthy surrealist video from Carrie Ann Baade made with Lemondoza, the art of Russian activist Inna Mosina, a really interesting piece from an artist called Nas Batis as well as a piece from Pussy Riot member Rita Flores. Could there maybe be a little too much of a Casey Jenkins influence in that Leila Davidova piece, do like the attitude of that piece from Leila Davidova though, an artist from Kyiv (see, art on line, it lets thing flow all over the globe, not just on Broadway), actually I’m sure Casey would think Leila’s piece excellent (there’s a little bit more Casey here). Do like that bit of classic pop art glitch from Empress Trash (who we’re told currently resides in Mexico City with her rottweiler). Hey look, I don’t like picking and choosing, every piece of art, all twenty-five pieces, are interesting, a more than healthy selection, wrong to be cherry picking and just picking out a handful of names, go explore for yourselves. The show is a good one in terms of the art, it sounds like the live event on April 12th might be extra exciting, art excites, go get excited.
